RANG SERVICES PRIVACY POLICY
When This Services Privacy Policy Applies
At Rang (“we,” “us,” or “our”), we are serious about protecting the privacy of our users, including students, parents, and school personnel (“you,” “your,” “user”). This Services Privacy Policy explains how information about users who log in to use our Services is collected, protected, used, and shared by us.
Schools in some states, including Illinois, may be required to post this Privacy Policy on their website, or make it available at the school’s administrative office.
Rang Rewards LLC (“Rang”) is a web-based rewards platform dedicated to improving student attendance and educational outcomes. Rang’s services include sourcing and managing branded incentives that schools can use to reinforce attendance improvement and positive student behaviors. This Services Privacy Policy describes how we handle information collected through login on our website (www.rang.com), our mobile and desktop applications, and related products and services (collectively, the “Services”). This Services Privacy Policy applies to all products and services offered by Rang for which users are required to log in.
This Services Privacy Policy does not apply to use of our website without login (that is covered by the Rang Website Privacy Policy below), to third-party websites you may access through links in the Services, or to any third-party app or website you access when redeeming a reward through a Rang subprocessor. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of every site you visit.
Rang complies with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”).
Notice of Policy Changes
Rang’s Services Privacy Policy may change over time. If we make changes, we will revise the date at the top of this page.
Information We Collect Through Use of Our Services
Rang collects student data solely to operate the attendance improvement program on behalf of the school. We collect and store information you provide to us through your use of our Services, and we generate information about your use. We receive and store information pursuant to our agreements with schools and with the school’s consent in order to perform our Services. “Personal Information” means information that can be used to identify, locate, or contact you, or that is linked to such information. It does not include de-identified or anonymized data. Personal Information we collect may include:
- Your name, username, email address, and other contact information;
- Your grade level and school attendance information;
- Information about how you interact with our Services, such as reward items you view or select;
- Device information, such as your IP address and device identifier; and
- Information about your transactions within the Services, including third-party websites accessed when redeeming rewards.
We collect certain student Personal Information directly from schools as necessary to provide the Services. Schools may also allow students in grades 6–12, including students under age 13, to interact directly with the Services and provide information such as their name, username, device information, and reward selections.
By entering into an agreement with Rang, schools confirm that they are providing all necessary consent under applicable law — including, but not limited to, FERPA and COPPA — for Rang to collect student Personal Information for the provision of the Services as described in this Privacy Policy. Schools are responsible for obtaining any parental consent required by law and for determining when additional parental consent is appropriate.
How We Collect Personal Information Through Use of Our Services
We collect Personal Information when you register for or log in to our Services, and directly from schools as described above. We also use cookies and related technologies to automatically collect information about your interactions with the Services. We do not use unique identifiers to track student users across third-party applications or websites.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to provide, maintain, and improve our Services; to respond to your questions and requests; to provide customer support; and to send you relevant updates about new rewards or program features. Rang’s use of student Personal Information is compliant with FERPA. The school retains ownership of student Personal Information and may review it at any time.
Parent or guardian requests to review, correct, or delete student Personal Information should be directed to the student’s school.
How We Share Your Information
Rang does not sell or rent your Personal Information to any third party for any purpose, including marketing, advertising, or profiling. Rang does not use your Personal Information for any commercial purpose unrelated to the provision of Services.
When Rang receives student Personal Information in connection with the Services, Rang acts as a “school official” under FERPA — performing an institutional function the school would otherwise use employees to perform, under the school’s direct control, and using student Personal Information only for authorized purposes. Rang will not re-disclose student Personal Information to third parties or affiliates without permission from the school or pursuant to court order, except as otherwise permitted by law.
We may share information with your school about your use of Rang to help teachers and administrators improve educational outcomes. We may also share information when required by law, to respond to legal process or government requests, or to protect the safety and security of the Services or our users.
We may share Personal Information in connection with a corporate transaction such as a merger, acquisition, or asset sale. Any successor entity will be bound by the terms of this Privacy Policy.
We may share Personal Information with third-party data processors (“Sub-Processors”) to operate and improve our Services. Sub-Processors are contractually prohibited from using your Personal Information for any purpose other than providing the contracted services, from disclosing it to other third parties, and are required to maintain appropriate security practices. A current list of Rang’s Sub-Processors is available at www.rang.com/subprocessors.
Aggregated and De-Identified Information
We may use and share aggregated or de-identified information that cannot be used to identify any individual student for any lawful purpose, including to operate and improve our Services, conduct research, and demonstrate program impact. Any such use will be in compliance with FERPA.
How We Protect Your Information
The security of your information is important to us. Rang uses commercially reasonable security standards and practices that meet or exceed industry standards designed to protect your Personal Information from unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification, or disclosure.
A “Security Breach” means the unauthorized acquisition of computerized data that compromises the security, confidentiality, or integrity of Personal Information maintained by Rang or a school. A Security Breach does not include the good faith acquisition of personal information by an employee or agent of Rang or a school for a legitimate purpose of Rang or a school.
If we become aware of a Security Breach that compromises your Personal Information, we will notify your school promptly after the Security Breach has been confirmed, unless we are advised to delay notification to avoid disrupting a law enforcement investigation.
In the event of a Security Breach attributable to Rang, each party — Rang and the school — will be responsible for their own costs and liabilities. Questions about our security practices can be directed to privacy@rang.com.
When We Delete Your Information
Rang deletes student Personal Information when it is no longer needed to provide the Services, in accordance with Rang’s standard destruction schedule. Rang will also delete or de-identify Personal Information upon a school’s request within 60 days. Rang may retain Personal Information beyond its standard schedule when required by court order, legal action, or to enforce its terms of service, protect the safety of the Services, or preserve Rang’s legal rights. Aggregated or de-identified information may be retained after all personally identifiable information has been deleted.
Children’s Privacy and School Consent
Rang is designed to be used as part of a school-directed attendance improvement program. In grades 6+, students use Rang to select their attendance incentives. In elementary grades PK-5, the primary user of Rang is the parent or guardian.
Because Rang is used as part of a school program, the schools act as agents for parents and guardians for purposes of COPPA compliance. By entering into an agreement with Rang, schools give consent for Rang to collect student Personal Information as needed for Rang to provide the Services and represent that the schools have obtained any necessary consents for students to access the Services, including students under the age of 13. Schools may also choose to obtain direct parental consent — Rang is happy to support that process.
Rang collects only the minimum student Personal Information necessary to provide the Services, such as student name, school email address, grade level, and attendance data provided by the school. (See complete list of Personal Information above in this Services Privacy Policy.) We do not use student data for advertising, marketing, or profiling. We do not sell student data.
The Children’s Privacy section of the Website Privacy Policy below applies to use of the Rang website without login. That section clarifies that the Rang website (outside of the Services) is not intended for use by children under 13.
